An unusual self-portrait. For her birthday, Antonia Baehr asked her friends to give her scores of her own laughter, using them as a basis for her work. “Laughter” is an expedition, a composition of very different types of laughter, a comparison of laughter including a bid to set a record in gales of laughter and a laughter record. A mixture of experimental set-up, lecture, but also very physical performance, that, although based upon a self-portrait, quickly questions the phenomenon of laughter as an individual, unique distinguishing characteristic.
In her works, the choreographer, director and performer Antonia Baehr explores the live character of theatre from ever new angles, fascinated by the conventions of the fourth wall. Her performances revolve around constructions of personality in general, but above all around the question of male and female identity which she seeks to merge or even annul.
In “Laughter” she explores laughter as an independent form of expression, detached from all punch lines, circumstances and other causes. Instead she focuses on the object itself: sound and form, music, choreography, rhythm and gesture. Her aim, however, is not humour, but laughter is, as we know, a social practice whose collective effect is hard to avoid.
