The public space is a contested space, but while some people defend their interests vociferously, other voices are often barely audible and play no active part in designing it. As an example of this competition for resources, “The Art of Urban Intervention” explores the living conditions and changes in the Annen district of Graz, an area with a complex social structure, that is also home to this year’s steirischer herbst festival centre.
Communication and cooperation with the inhabitants of this district, with businesspeople, cultural and social facilities, educational institutions and local planning offices form the basis on which a district radio station and a dedicated magazine, among other things, will be set up during the festival. Tours of this part of the city will focus on the expertise of the people living in the Annenstraße area, showcasing the first artistic works in this long-term project.
