Suddenly we’ve lost track: Where are we, where, at least, is a point from which we can get our bearings? The choreographer Philipp Gehmacher and video artist Vladimir Miller create a space that we can view from all sides and that demonstrates how each decision in favour of a particular viewing angle is at the same time a decision against possible others.
In maritime language “dead reckoning” refers to a method of navigation that is not based on absolute fixed points outside of the ship: lighthouses, stars or poles. The current position is estimated on the basis of the last determined course and elapsed time – orientation thus becomes a constant forecast, that works its way along from the last certainty.
In Gehmacher’s and Miller’s installation, the supposed orientation is an illusion, the reconstruction of movement and space is always only possible in fragments. Although almost close enough to touch, we always remain shut out – despite all immediacy always in a different space, a different time. The four video recordings on two intersecting screens stake out an image space that seems to show us everything but in fact only shows us excerpts. A reconstruction of the total picture fails, total orientation becomes a construct with niches. The three dancers’ game with the camera is at the same time a game with us, and – revolving around the choreography – we become the choreography ourselves.
