The exhibition pavilion for “Utopia and Monument I” negotiates the contradiction between the public space – characterised by its promise of democratic debate – and the exhibition space – with its inherent museum regime of visibility and knowledge production.

As an urban patio, the pavilion is closed off towards the surrounding road area, raised off the ground, and accessible only by means of a staircase. It constitutes an exemplary detail of the public urban space, its volume and scale deriving from classical exhibition spaces, but its interior, lacking a roof, exposed to the elements and the conditions of the public city space. A street light projects into the pavilion from below – now serving to illuminate the interior. A picnic bench from the neighbouring square becomes a resting bench for visitors to the exhibition or for users of the city in general.

The pavilion is a simple timber structure supported by a frame of standard scaffolding elements. The walls and floor are made from formwork panels, on which the exhibits are printed. No difference is made between the shell and the exhibition display. As such, the exhibition itself – as a public form of debate – is subject to similar conditions and questions as the art projects in the public space it presents.

The Kooperative für Darstellungspolitik investigates the representation of political and cultural issues in the public sphere. It understands exhibiting as a public form of discourse – as a cultural method of questioning and convincing. The exhibition design continues these negotiations in an enclosed space, tapping into discursive social spaces with its politics of representation and inherent viewing conditions.
