A flight through a disconcertingly hostile world, ominous, foggy, rainy. Through horrific urban landscapes and tunnel systems full of brutal children, nasty gangsters, scheming hotel managers, underhanded circus artistes and melancholy ghosts. In “Void Story” the legendary British theatre company Forced Entertainment – whose artistic director and author Tim Etchells brought “That Night Follows Day” to steirischer herbst, a play performed by children for adults – tells a dark, black-humoured and always ambiguous photographic science-fiction story: A couple suddenly thrown out of their flat and their accustomed life flees through a world that feels like a computer game: level follows level, but there is no way out, no winner – and no next try at winning. A journey into the night, so dark that no stars can be seen.
Forced Entertainment perform Etchells’ creepy contemporary fable like a radio play, sitting at tables, leafing through the script while imitating prop sounds, changing their voices for different roles at the microphones and playing back sound effects for gunshots, rain and poor phone connections. The storyboard for a film that cannot really be made flickers atop the otherwise empty stage. Between live dialogues, recorded sounds and collaged images a story evolves that seems so totally distant and yet comes closer to us than we might think.
